The Auto Styling Series: Mercedes AMG GT Black Series

Updated: Jan 31, 2021

The Black Series is a famous line within the AMG ranks that needs no introduction. The AMG division within the Mercedes world has produced a long line of hardcore, very powerful cars using the Mercedes line up as the base.

The C63, S65, CL63, E63 are all familiar nodes that sat in front of the AMG badge. The Affalterbach division produced some of the most popular lines for the rich and those looking to get into a powerful, top of the range Mercedes once depreciation had done its worst.

But when it comes to power, absolute crazy, tyre shredding, traction destroying power.

The Black Series was a step further.

From the CLK, SLK to the C class, SL, SLS and now the new AMG GT, the Black Series editions can be described in one word... "mad".

The CLK63 Black Series in 2007 had 500bhp and 630 Nm.

2008? SL65 Black Series 661bhp and 1000 Nm.

2013? SLS 622bhp and 635 Nm

2021? AMG GT Black Series 720hp and 800 Nm

The power output for the release of each of these cars rivalled the output from Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Paganis of the time. I repeat, one word... mad.

These cars were uncontrollable, violent and unmanageable and it created a cult following because of it.

But now in 2020 720 bhp doesn't sound as ludicrous as it should do, technology has moved on and power outputs have climbed and climbed with time. The AMG GT Black Series has received great press, recording fantastic lap times and earning plaudits for its handling, and so the madness has come around in a different guise this time.

The design for the new Black Series is super aggressive and bold. The big front grille continues to suit and makes the car look as menacing as something that wants to tear up tarmac. The vents in the bonnet both functional and great to look at, follow the pattern from previous Black Series models and with the addition of Carbon Fibre, add an element of prestige to the aggression.

The Carbon front lip follows the lines of the AMG GT, working perfectly with both the design and the function for which it was included. The additional side fins and more pronounced side skirts all contribute to increased downforce and a better look.

Keeping in touch with the madness of a Black Series edition is the rear wing and here from an aesthetics point of view, I feel the Black Series is let down.

The rear wing operates what appears to be a ladder effect, appropriate for additional downforce, yes, however the rear wing is just too big for my liking.

It doesn't seem to match the design of the car and the number of ridges in the wing make it feel like its creation is based purely on function with not much emphasis on looks.

The contrasting rear diffuser looks suitably menacing, the jagged edges and sharp lines again help with downforce and the movement of air underneath the car but also in 2020 are like a power symbol for supercars. The contrast of the rear diffuser to the silver paintwork works it way down the sides of the car with the side skirts and is equally impressive in design.

Much has been said about the new AMG GT Black Series and its capability on the road, for the design and its styling, it is a car I like the look of, bar the rear wing.

Maybe the wing is something that we will just have to get used to.... like BMW's new grills....
