The Auto Styling Series: BMW M3 & M4

Updated: Nov 21, 2020

So the new BMW M3 and M4.... a lot has been said and those now famous grills have been commented to death! It's fair to say that both the M3 and the M4 have always been good looking attractive cars in either their saloon, coupe or convertible guises.

The new M3 and M4 however have strongly divided opinion, with many believing, including myself, that the front grille is too large and ruins the look. It makes the M model have to do too much work to make the car look moderately good.

The rear of both cars, in my opinion, show a great natural development from the old models, not too different but still different enough to be regarded as a new shape. The rear lines look well proportioned and aggressive in the M guise and with the sleek rear lights, represent a modern and appealing design.

And yet amongst so much negative press around the grille, BMW have announced the M Performance Kit for both cars, providing a list of OEM mods to enhance the M car further.

Could this be seen as an admittance that they went too far with the design? Who knows...

The above car has been doing the rounds on the internet, straddled with M Performance Parts and with what looks like a unique wrap (or an amazing paint job), this M3 looks very aggressive and dare I say it, I think it works.

The red paintwork does a wonderful job in bringing the vents and grooves in the bonnet to the fore and drawing your eyes to these subtle but necessary designs.

The black bumper, painted red halfway up, blends perfectly with the grille and does a supreme job in making the grille suit the front of the car.

The side skirts typically suit the car with a flared but subtle design, finished in carbon fibre and with a red accent running along the length of the skirt. I like this.

My reservations come with the rear. The back end of the new M3/M4 was never the issue, it looked good from the offset and I feel the additional wing and redesigned quad exhausts are trying to do too much, where little extra was needed.

The design of the wing does not suit the shape of the car and looks like it belongs on a supercar, in my opinion. The quad exhausts, frankly, look weird. Not terrible but not an improvement on what already looked good.

Could the key to the design be the colour chosen? Is this one of those cars that just won't look good with any paint option?

I think what we have seen with this paint option and front bumper design makes the car look good and this version, I would not hesitate to be seen in.
