Another V10 Iteration!?: Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica

It seemed like only yesterday that Lamborghini launched the Huracan STO. The STO serves as a track focused road car to crown the model, providing a special edition after the EVO face lift refreshed the line up.

So what's going on here? Another track focused Huracan, isn't that what the STO is for?!

Well this is not something new. The Huracan is in its last years of production before Lamborghini introduce a plug in hybrid and eventually a replacement in the next 5 or so years. Towards the end of the Gallardo's life there was a flood of special editions as the Huracan was being prepared. LP570-4 Supertrofeo, LP570-4 Supertrofeo Stradale, LP 570-4 Edizione Tecnica, LP 570-4 Squadra Corse, LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni to name a few, were all released within the last 2 production years of the Gallardo.

Easy how much of the past we forget! Nevertheless we have a new Huracan on our hands that needs to be explored.

The Huracan has reached somewhat of a limit in terms of power with the Tecnica producing the same 640hp as you get in the STO and Performante and all driven through the rear wheels. 0-62mph is quoted in 3.2s although given the performance of past models this figure could be very cautionary.

On the looks side nothing too radical has happened, small changes are introduced to distinguish from the STO and the Evo but this is not a complete rework. The front bumper has been modified again but subtlely as the front bumper fangs, originally on the Performante, make a return with slightly sharper edges and a more inverted angle.

The alloy wheels here are unchanged with the side profile consistent with the Evo and Performante editions.

The rear is where the real changes have taken place. The diffuser as with all other Huracans is marginally different but the Tecnica opts for a more placid look with less diffuser slats arguably taking an element of aggression away from previous versions.

The exhaust exits are still mid mounted, a change that definitely improved the rear of the stock Huracan however this time taking on a hexagonal shape. With hexagonal exits not typically seen on Lambos it feels like a change just to differentiate from previous editions which, in my opinion, doesn't suit the Tecnica and plays in to what is a disappointing rear design, given this represents a new edition. The Huracan seemed to struggle with the rear, something Lamborghini recognised and went some way to rectify with the Performante and Evo but Tecnica hasn't made further progress.

The rear wing is completely new, shorter than the Performante wing and with a more angular design, however the struts on which the wing stands are too short and don't measure up to the level set by the Perf. The wing along with the rear continues to disappoint and doesn't present an improvement on what the Huracan has shown us before.

On the face of it, the Tecnica doesn't seem to bring a huge amount of change. To really understand what Lamborghini have created that could possibly stand out from the current models, the Tecnica needs to be unleashed on a track and in the hands of a professional driver.

For the rest of us enthusiasts, this is an edition that may prove to be special, rare and sought after in 5-10 years time like the later edition Gallardos. But for now there's not enough excitement for a new Huracan that isn't substantially different.
